On Thursday the California Winter League held its first organized workouts for the 2013 season. More than 150 players from across the globe gathered at Palm Springs Stadium throughout the day and participated in defensive drills, bullpen sessions, base running segments and live batting practice.

Many of the players who arrived Wednesday night in Palm Springs battled jetlag, but despite the time difference, the players showed a lot of energy and enthusiasm as they were eager to get back on the diamond.

Instructors Address Players During Organized Workouts

“It was great to finally lace up the cleats again and swing the bat,” 22-year-old shortstop Daniel Yancelson said. “Everything was run really smoothly, and it’s great being with players that have the same passion and dreams as I do.”

This year’s winter league features 17 top instructors from various independent leagues. The instructors are evaluating the large talent pool in anticipation of making eight teams for the upcoming season starting Saturday, January 19.

Fans were invited free of charge to attend the open workout session. Fans are encouraged to attend tomorrow’s open workout which is also free to the public. For more information about the California Winter League please visit www.CaliforniaWinterLeague.com or call 760-788-4487.
